Stock (share)
A small piece of ownership in a company. Its price rises and falls with what investors expect from the company.
If a company has 1,000,000 shares and you own 1,000, you own 0.1% of it. You may receive part of the profits as dividends, and the share price can rise or fall. If the company fails, the shares can become worthless.
