Risk per trade

The money you lose if the trade hits your stop-loss, often shown as a percentage of the account.

It is not your deposit and not your margin. On a $5,000 account, 1% risk per trade is $50. You turn that amount into a lot size using the distance to your stop. Recalculate it when the balance changes.
